“If I drive for you, you give me a time and a place. I give you a five-minute window, anything happens in that five minutes and I’m yours no matter what. I don’t sit in while you’re running it down; I don’t carry a gun… I drive.”
This is a quote by Ryan Gosling in the 2011 movie Drive. The story is based on a Hollywood stunt performer who wants to be perceived as a wheelman and discovers that a heist gone bad made him a wanted man.
Ryan Gosling stars alongside Carey Mulligan and Bryan Cranston when replaced Hugh Jackman to take the lead role. The movie depicts realistic images of Los Angeles which Ryan Gosling spend time showing the Director Nicholas Winding Refn. It’s interesting to note that the Director had no knowledge of the city before and was hand picked by Ryan Gosling when he replaced Neil Marshal as the director for the project. California is another location which the movie was filmed in the US.
Drive is based on a book, which was adapted into a movie by Hossein Amini who is an Iranian screenwriter. The book is a 2005 novel written by James Sallis, an American crime writer. It is important to note some scenes added in the movie are inspired by things that the director and the lead character experienced together. In the movie, the scene where the Driver listens to the radio while waiting was inspired by an awkward moment when Ryan Gosling drove Nicholas Refn around while Reo Speed wagon was playing on the radio. REO Speed wagon is a rock band and the two were silent because Refn had a cold at the time.
All the licensed songs used in the movie such as A Real Hero by College and the opening song Nightcall by Kavinsky have a retro feel. They were actually released between 2007 and 2011.Released in September 2011, this movie is rated R for depicting strong brutal bloody violence, some nudity and language. The Driver and Irene say very little to each other and Mulligan best summarizes making the film as “staring longingly at Ryan Gosling for hours each day”.
